XAU/AUD Explained — How the International Gold Spot Price Determines What Your Gold Is Worth in Australia

XAU/AUD Explained — How the International Gold Spot Price Determines What Your Gold Is Worth in Australia

Every day, sellers bring gold into our store at 303 Pitt Street with a rough idea of what it might be worth — usually based on something they read online, a figure from another buyer, or a general sense that "gold is high right now." What almost nobody arrives with is a precise understanding of how the international gold price translates into Australian dollars per gram for their specific piece. That understanding is worth real money. This article explains exactly how it works.

What Is XAU/AUD?

XAU is the international currency code for gold. It comes from the Latin aurum, the element symbol Au on the periodic table. AUD is the Australian dollar. Together, XAU/AUD is the live price of one troy ounce of pure 24-carat gold in Australian dollars.

This figure is the foundational reference point for every gold transaction in Australia. Whether you are selling a single ring at a CBD shop or a kilogram bar to a bullion dealer, the price you receive is calculated from this number — adjusted for purity, weight and the buyer's margin.

At Gold Exchange Universe, we publish the live XAU/AUD rate on our website updated every 60 seconds, displayed as both dollars per troy ounce and dollars per gram. The per-gram figure is the more useful number for private sellers, since jewellery and scrap gold are priced by the gram.

How Is the Gold Spot Price Set?

The gold spot price is determined by continuous trading on global exchanges, primarily the COMEX futures market in New York and the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). These markets operate across different time zones, meaning gold trades essentially 24 hours a day on business days.

The price is influenced by a range of factors:

  • US dollar strength. Gold is priced globally in USD. When the US dollar weakens, gold prices in USD typically rise. The inverse also applies.
  • Central bank activity. Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset. Large purchases or sales by central banks move the price.
  • Inflation expectations. Gold is widely held as a hedge against inflation. When inflation expectations rise, demand for gold increases.
  • Geopolitical uncertainty. Gold is considered a safe-haven asset. Political instability and conflict typically drive the price higher.
  • Mining supply. Changes in global gold production affect long-term supply dynamics.
  • ETF flows. Large gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) hold physical gold. When investors buy into these funds, the fund managers buy gold — increasing demand and pushing the price up.

None of these factors are predictable in the short term, which is why the spot price moves continuously and why buying rates at reputable dealers update in real time rather than daily or weekly.

Why the AUD/USD Exchange Rate Matters

Gold is priced globally in US dollars. The XAU/AUD rate that Australian sellers care about is derived by converting the USD price using the current AUD/USD exchange rate. This creates an important dynamic that many Australian gold sellers overlook.

When the Australian dollar falls against the US dollar, the AUD gold price rises — even if the USD gold price has not moved. Conversely, a strong Australian dollar suppresses the AUD gold price relative to what is happening globally in USD terms.

In practice, this means the best time to sell gold in Australia is not necessarily when global markets are rising — it is when the combination of a rising USD gold price and a weak AUD produces a high XAU/AUD rate. Watching both figures, not just the global headline price, gives sellers a more complete picture.

Gold Exchange Universe publishes both figures on our website. We also display the per-gram AUD rate directly — the figure that translates immediately into your payout without any conversion required.

From Spot Price to Your Payout — The Exact Calculation

Once you have the live XAU/AUD per-gram figure, your payout is calculated as follows:

Payout = Weight (grams) × Spot Price (AUD/g) × Purity Factor × Buyer Margin

The purity factor converts the spot price — which reflects pure 24CT gold — into the actual gold content of your piece:

Carat Purity Purity Factor
9CT37.5%0.375
14CT58.3%0.583
18CT75.0%0.750
22CT91.6%0.916
24CT99.9%0.999

The buyer margin reflects the dealer's cost of doing business. At Gold Exchange Universe, this is 93.5% for scrap gold and jewellery and 98% for certified gold bullion bars. No refining fees, no assay charges, no deductions after the quote.

A worked example at a spot price of $190.00 AUD per gram:

  • 15g of 9CT gold: 15 × $190 × 0.375 × 0.935 = $1,003.69
  • 8g of 18CT gold: 8 × $190 × 0.75 × 0.935 = $1,068.30
  • 1oz certified gold bullion bar (31.1g, 999.9): 31.1 × $190 × 0.9999 × 0.98 = $5,784.64

Why the Spot Price Is the Same Everywhere — But Your Payout Isn't

The XAU/AUD spot price is a single global reference figure. It is identical whether you are looking at it in Sydney, Melbourne, London or New York at the same moment in time. Every gold buyer in Australia works from the same underlying number.

What differs between buyers is two things: the margin they apply, and whether they deduct additional fees after quoting. A buyer offering "97% of spot" with a $40 refining fee pays less than a buyer offering "93.5% of spot" with no fees on any transaction under approximately 55 grams of 18CT gold — because the net effective rate after the fee is lower.

This is why the correct comparison between gold buyers is not the advertised percentage, but the net cash you receive after every deduction on your specific piece. The formula above gives you that figure before you walk through any door.

When Is the Best Time to Sell Gold in Australia?

From 35 years of experience, the answer is: when you have gold to sell and you need the cash. Attempting to time the gold market as a private seller adds complexity without reliable benefit.

That said, two observable conditions tend to produce higher AUD payouts:

  1. Rising global uncertainty. Geopolitical tension, financial market volatility or inflation concerns typically push the USD gold price higher.
  2. A weak Australian dollar. When AUD/USD falls, the same USD gold price converts to more Australian dollars.

Both conditions were present simultaneously during 2024 and into 2025, which is why many sellers who held gold for years found the recent period particularly favourable. Whether those conditions persist is not something any buyer or seller can reliably predict.

Frequently Asked Questions

XAU is the international currency code for gold (from the Latin aurum). AUD is the Australian dollar. XAU/AUD is the live price of one troy ounce of pure 24-carat gold in Australian dollars, updated continuously during global market hours.

How is the gold spot price set?

By continuous trading on global exchanges — primarily COMEX in New York and the LBMA in London. Supply and demand from institutional buyers, central banks, ETF flows, mining output and currency movements all influence the price in real time.

What is the gold spot price per gram in Australia today?

The live XAU/AUD per gram rate is published at goldexchangeuniverse.com.au, updated every 60 seconds. Visit the website or call 02 9267 9990 for the current figure.

Why does the gold price change in AUD even when the US price stays the same?

Gold is priced globally in USD. Converting to AUD applies the current AUD/USD exchange rate. If the Australian dollar weakens, the AUD gold price rises even if the USD price is unchanged.

How does the gold spot price translate into what I get paid for my jewellery?

Payout = Weight (grams) × Live XAU/AUD Spot Price × Purity Factor × Buyer Margin. Gold Exchange Universe pays 93.5% of spot for scrap gold and 98% for certified bullion, with no additional fees.

Is the gold spot price the same everywhere in Australia?

Yes — XAU/AUD is a single global reference figure identical in Sydney, Melbourne or anywhere else. What differs between buyers is the margin applied and whether additional fees are deducted from the quoted price.
